We have worked with some fantastic groups during the last two years and learnt a great deal about their ongoing struggle to adequately equip all the young people involved.  It is important the donated outdoor gear gets to as many young people as possible. For this to happen we need  lots of groups located in all parts of the UK. So please let us know if we can help your group – Sarah Howcroft Founder Gift Your Gear

World Environment Day 5th June 2014

World Environment Day 5th June 2014

The UN has hosted World Environment Day every year since 1972, encouraging people to treat the environment more kindly. The UN General Assembly have declared 2014 as the International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). So this year World Environment Day will be raising awareness of the challenges and successes of these environments

We’ve all heard about climate change and how global warming is causing sea levels to rise. And, we are aware that sea levels rise when ice melts. But, did you know that when the global temperature warms, seawater expands and occupies more space. So, small island communities around the world are regularly exposed to floods and storm surges.

World Environment Day is an opportunity for people to get together to work towards a greener and cleaner world for everyone. So, why not make a ‘call to action’ and arrange a community clean up,  do your bit to reduce food waste or seek out a reuse or recycling option for all your unused and unwanted possessions. Including your outdoor gear!

Remember to tell the UN Environment Programme what you are planning to do and they’ll post the details on their website!

California’s Bureo Skateboards is working with the Chilean government to create Minnow, a skateboard whose deck is made entirely from abandoned fishing nets from the country’s coastline.

Bureo Skateboards helped fund the release of Minnow through a successful Kickstarter.

ISPO Gold Award – The Rethink Bag

| Recycle Outdoor Gear | 23rd May, 2014

Picture Organic The Rethink Bag

From time to time we spot some interesting new gear that is really trying to address some of the problems presented when the gear has worn out. This is one of them:

Picture won an ISPO AWARD for The Rethink Bag. It was chosen as GOLD WINNER 2014 in the category Lifestyle Backpack.

Besides the fact that the Rethink Bag contains 30% of Recycled Polyester and is 100% Oekotex 100 certified, it has been designed with a unique second life concept: each part of the bag is easily removable and can be used to contain new products instead of throwing it away. Consumers can simply take a pair of scissors and follow the red lines when they are done with their Rethink Bag, and transform it into new pencil cases, new toiletry bags, and even new laptop cases.

This is their story:

Rohan Elite Rider Dog Coat Review

| Recycle Outdoor Gear | 12th April, 2014

Scrappy Nelson-Elite Rider Dog Coat

I was excited when I found out I was finally going to have a Rohan coat of my own. Now I know there a those out the who say dogs don’t need coats – and as a Border Terrier with a lovely double coat of fur I would normally agree, but let me explain. For the last year I have begun to suffer badly with environmental allergies. The short of it being that come Spring I am bathed in medicated shampoo if I’m lucky only twice a week. It’s not so bad and I’ve grown accustomed to it, but it does mean my coat doesn’t get the opportunity to produce its lovely natural oils meaning it has no natural waterproofing and I can get cold very quickly. But enough about me.

Elite Rider Dog Coat Elite Rider Dog Coat

My olds (you know – the ones I live with) have a lot of Rohan kit for every eventuality. This particular coat started out as an Elite Rider Jacket belonging to my old man. Following a Mountain Biking accident the jacket did sustain a small tear on the sleeve (and him a broken thumb) rendering it out of action, but this is where I got lucky. The ripped coat was passed to my friend Jo at Trampy Ted for a re-style. What came back was the first ever hand made bespoke Rohan Dog Elite Jacket and this is my review.

Elite Rider Dog Coat Elite Rider Dog Coat

So I’ve had coats before, mostly for winter time. Who can forget the lovely Barbour jacket – I rolled that in sheep poo on its inaugural outing. What I was missing was a lightweight waterproof, suited to the April showers without being padded or weighty and uncomfortable. The Elite is perfect. The lightweight material gives it a barely there feel which means it doesn’t irritate my already sensitive skin. It’s wind and waterproofing means my body is kept dry during any sudden downpours so no shivering or needing to turn back when the spring weather takes a sudden turn. It’s crease resistance means I can still look smart even if it’s been packed into their pocket, and the bright colour and reflective trim means I can be safe and seen even into Dusk and Darkness. Due to the original design of the Rider jacket and clever tailoring of Jo I even have a pocket for emergency noms. My new Rohan coat provides me with the practical protection my allergy shampooed coat lacks and without fuss. I plan to be wearing it for many years to come and adding to my collection should my olds have any other, how shall I put it – little accidents.

donate your unwanted outdoor clothing and equipment

Born to be worn, not stitched to be ditched

In wardrobes, attics and garages, long forgotten items of outdoor clothing and equipment are gathering dust. The great outdoors is where they belong.

Gift Your Gear is an award-winning nationwide initiative that provides outdoor clothing and equipment to UK community organisations, youth groups and charities working with young people in the outdoors. Founded by Sarah Howcroft, Gift Your Gear encourages people to donate outdoor gear they no longer want or need.

Partnering the unwanted with the needed

Gift Your Gear - Partnering the unwanted with the needed

Young people need to get outdoors for their physical and emotional well-being. The cost of outdoor clothing and equipment is often a barrier to participation.

First impressions count and It’s hard to enjoy your early experiences in the outdoors when you’re cold, wet and uncomfortable. Having the right clothing and equipment helps to ensure that outdoor experiences are safe and enjoyable.

“The benefit of Gift Your Gear is best defined as providing an opportunity to all so as to ensure that ability to pay for kit is not the over-riding criteria for participation.” – Laurence Parsons

The outdoor gear you donate will make a real difference to the community organisations, youth groups and charities who receive it. Enabling others to benefit from life changing experiences in the great outdoors regardless of their circumstances.

Donate your unwanted outdoor clothing

Gift Your Gear has partnered with Rohan, the award-winning outdoor and travel clothing company. Drop off your unwanted waterproofs, fleeces, outdoor trousers, insulated jackets, hats and gloves regardless of brand including children’s clothing at any Rohan Shop during March and in return Rohan would like to offer you 15% off a full priced purchase made the same day as a qualifying Gift Your Gear donation.

Rohan has high street shops from Inverness to Truro, you’re sure to find one near you. Whether it’s to drop off your unwanted outdoor gear or to browse the new spring range you’re guaranteed to get a warm welcome. Find your nearest Rohan shop.

Unwanted Tents Become High Fashion

| Recycle Outdoor Gear | 27th January, 2014

foil

We get a number of enquiries every day regarding the how, what, when and where around recycling of all outdoor gear. A category that we struggle to help with is recycling of tents.

So when we do get enquiries about reusing and recycling tents our ears go up.

colour board-2

This was the case with Jess, who contacted us recently.  A fashion student in London creating her final collection based around the idea of mountaineering using recycled fabrics. She is hoping to make jackets out of recycled tents. So guess what she needs tents!

We asked her for some more details on her project and back came Jess’s own explanation on her motivation for her project…

summative line up1

The collection follows the happenings of a group of girl guides and their activities. All forced to wear the same uniform they make a statement, even if they don’t realise they’re making one. Though uniform should enforce utility and sameness the standard size only helps to make the silhouette more varied and pronounced, exploring the idea of clothes being too big, leaving room to grow in to them, or too short, having grown out of them too quickly. More interested in creating their own adventures than those planned for them their imaginations and habitat begin to shape their aesthetic, merging starched silhouettes with bagginess and dishevelment. The collection also draws inspiration from the images taken from the first ascent of Mount Everest, which adds key details to the collection, and an idea of practical clothing being created in an imaginative way.

The idea of utility combined with playful imagination and adventure sees the coming together of practical details, such as drawstrings and boxy pockets, with recycled fabrics. Space blankets and climbing ropes lose their functionality with their purpose altered through the imagination of the gang. Recycled tents are reinvented to create oversized anoraks and parka coats.

The focus of the collection is to promote the idea of reuse and recycling within the fashion industry but in a way that isn’t too obvious. A garment appeals to the customer because it is beautiful, not because it is ethical. Therefore the garment should be exquisitely made and then cherished because it stands for something greater than just aesthetics.

If you have any unwanted tents please contact Recycle Outdoor Gear.

If you know of any tent upcycling, recycling or reuse projects please let us know.
