BMC Volunteer wanted to recycle climbing gear

ROG recycling climbing equipment carabiners, helmet and rope

Recycling climbing ropes, helmets and hardware

It’s always good to see recycling initiatives by outdoor organisations and companies in the UK.

This one recently came to our attention.

The BMC is supporting a pilot project to see if there is a commercial model for recycling climbing ropes and other equipment like helmets and hardware. They are looking for volunteers interested in a career in sustainable business.

This all came about because Dan Firth, a hill walker and climber who has worked in sustainable procurement for various public and private sector bodies as an environmental consultant. When he came to get rid of some old rope, he wondered why it was that no one was offering to take it off his hands. Surely this stuff might be worth something? That’s when he contacted the BMC.

Over the last few months, with the BMC’s encouragement, Dan did some research on whether there might be a business in recycling gear, or perhaps a job or two, which are in short supply right now. From what he’s found out, there are positive signs the idea is worth exploring further, and the BMC are helping him set up a trial project.

Dan told ROG

Everyone I’ve talked to over the last few months while I’ve been shaping up the project has been very enthusiastic, which is great. The BMC were very supportive of the idea when I approached them which has been very helpful. I’m really hopeful that the pilot will be a success and that we can go on to establish the scheme across the country. As well as the obvious concern about not sending all our used kit to landfill I’m also concerned about how difficult it can be for younger people to get a job and it would be great if we could do even a little to help this. Any profit we make will go to ACT (Access Conservation Trust).

So while we’re getting set up please could you hang onto all that old kit for just a bit longer!”

Initially it’s for three months and will be unpaid.

In the long run, if the idea works out, the project will be rolled out nation-wide, and there will be a paid-work job after the initial pilot.

Interested? Then please read the job description and get in touch.

A day full of surprises

| Recycle Outdoor Gear | 8th May, 2012

ROG says thank you

It was Bank Holiday Monday raining windy and I was working…

Something very special happened.

A Direct Message tweet from @MyOutdoorsUK this is was the text:

Working on new site design and was going to have a sell/swap/buy section but makes more sense to direct people to you, is that OK with you?

I have been in and around the UK outdoor industry for many years and not much surprises me. Then out of the blue an action such as this, that took me completely by surprise.

MyOutdoors have just given their website a big make over and the intention was to include in the new make over a buy, sell, classified listing of used outdoor gear. They are not doing this and have chosen to link to ROG instead. In doing this they have undoubtedly strengthen ROG. Their belief that the trade has to work together to move towards a more sustainable business model was put before their own quest for traffic.

It is very rare that this happens. I can hear a few murmurs of all is fair in love, war and lets not forget business. Increasingly the new spirit of more enlightened business is collaboration with regard to the bigger problems especially in the quest for more sustainable business models.

If lovers of outdoors can’t take responsibility for conserving our resources and environment how can we expect others to? Every product we can reuse means one less product to dig out of the ground or use precious resources manufacturing while giving value to those who can use what we no longer choose to. We chose to support ROG’s initiative because it’s only by working together that we can make a difference and ROG is leading the way spreading the message. -Dave Mycroft – MyOutdoors

The new website is extensive, it will keep you up to date with the latest news, views and reviews from the UK’s outdoors. The UK outdoor calendar is excellent, a new job service, how to guides, reviews, news, editorial comment it has got the lot and more. I understand there is more to come as well.

Please join me in saying a big thank you to MyOutdoors and could I ask you to like them on Facebook and follow on Twitter to show our appreciation.

Thank you from all at ROG

Sarah Howcroft

Bank Holiday Outdoor Gear Clearout

| Recycle Outdoor Gear | 4th May, 2012

With a cold, damp Bank Holiday forecast, why not use the time to, reuse and recycle all that unwanted outdoor kit in the loft, garage, behind the sofa or in the rucksack you also never use in the airing cupboard.

Yes I know I have been there.

Know what I mean?

It’s a great time to get it all out, sort it out and send details of what you have to ROG.

Put your own free ad on ROG it only takes a moment.

Or just send ROG the details with a photo, if possible and we will do the rest.

Can’t say fairer than that.

A Sea of Litter

| Recycle Outdoor Gear | 30th April, 2012

Marine Trash Beach Collection

Walking along a beach in The Burren a few weeks ago I came across the above.

A striking example of the amazing array of litter found on the shore. The banner had been created after a beach clean up.

This was only a very tiny selection, what you don’t see in the photo is the mound of litter awaiting collection.

I pondered on beach litter during my walk and arrived at this question.

If we did a clean up of our popular mountain areas what would the photo look like?

Maybe it has already been done if you have any photos please share them.

ReFleece new life for old fleece

| Recycle Outdoor Gear | 29th April, 2012

Sam Palmer and Jennifer Feller ReFleece

We search the world for stories about recycling, reuse and upcycling of outdoor gear. This is a great story about two people that are doing just that.

Started by husband and wife team Sam Palmer and Jennifer Feller, ReFleece is a small design company creating products from a new kind of upcycled felt. The felt is made from reclaimed Patagonia® fleece, collected through Patagonia’s Common Threads™ program, then pressed into Kindle™ and iPad™ cases.

“We met each other folding fleece at the Patagonia Boston store, 17 years ago. Sam was studying aeronautical engineering at Northeastern, and I was starting a renewable energy nonprofit. We were both working retail to make some money, but we fell in love with the way that Patagonia really lives its mission. We have a LOT of old fleece lying around our house! Sam worked with plastics when he was looking for new surfboard materials, so he realized that we could use it to mold new products. He made the first ones in our oven, cooling them in the molds in the backyard. We’re so happy that folks are looking for reclaimed and upcycled products – we have really been bowled over by the response that people have to ReFleece.” Jennifer Feller

ReFleece a great ideaAlthough buying recycled plastic and fleece products does cut down on the oil needed to produce virgin products, the typical recycling process itself can be energy intensive. The ReFleece process, by contrast, avoids the shipping and high-heat re-melting typically used in fleece recycling, in favor of a lower-energy pressing process. Cases are manufactured entirely in the U.S. Each case is unique, and features the original colors, and even the original seam patterns, of the Patagonia jacket or sweater. The cases are lightweight, durable, water resistant, and can be thrown right in the recycling bin to “close the loop” again.

ReFleece Kindle Cases

Palmer is a designer and surfer, with a long-time relationship with Patagonia. He helped to design their first surfboard, prompted by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard to look for a smaller environmental footprint than traditional surfboards. After earning a masters degree in product design from Stanford, Palmer joined design firm IDEO, where he designed products for companies like Xyliss, Target, and Proctor & Gamble.

Feller is a former science teacher and environmental activist, with experience as a consultant to non-profit start ups. She and Palmer combine their passion for sustainability with a deep belief in the importance of great design.

ReFleece cases are currently sold online, and in several design boutiques in New York City and the Boston area. They’ll be sold by Patagonia stores beginning in late summer.

ROG looks forward to Earth Day

| Recycle Outdoor Gear | 20th April, 2012

One Billion Acts of Green

Earth Day on April 22  is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment.

Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson on April 22, 1970. Denis Hayes, who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations.

Earth Day is now celebrated globally in more than 175 countries every year. Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week with an entire week of activities focused on environmental issues.

This year, the theme for Earth Day is Mobilize the Earth. Earth Day Network will also continue to achieve the goal of registering A Billion Acts of Green® before the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro (Rio+20) in June 2012. The website enables people to register and support the idea that real change occurs best when millions of people commit to it with their actions.

Every Act registered will be counted toward the ultimate goal of amassing one billion actions in advance of the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. With millions of actions, A Billion Acts of Green® is the largest environmental service and advocacy campaign in the world.

What have you done for the earth today? Submit an Act of Green

We thought it would be great if ROG could do something for the UK Great Outdoors.

Last year, before ROG was born, we started a twitter account earthdaygouk just before Earth Day so we could tweet our act of green for the UK Outdoors. Last year we had people who had tweeted that they had cleared litter on their way off the hills, repaired walls, organised lift sharing on their trips to the National Parks, planted trees and lots more.

EarthDayGoUk is powered by you share your act of green for the Great Outdoors UK and inspire others to do the same

Upcycling cars to backpacks

| Recycle Outdoor Gear | 2nd April, 2012

One of the major aims of ROGBlog is to seek out and tell the stories of reuse and recycling of all outdoor gear.

There is also another topic that is getting a lot of interest in recent months ’Upcycling‘ – Converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or a higher environmental value.

This is such a story…

Mariclaro upcycles exploded air bags, car upholstery, bike tubes, truck tarps into carryalls, backpacks and bags. Based in Toronto they are perfecting upcycling from bags made of car upholstery to jackets made from exploded airbags, and earrings from 8mm film.

They produce some fantastic bags and backpacks from redundant automotive scrap.

A quote lifted from Mariclaro website states…
“There’s so much old stuff, why would you buy anything new”

Mariclaro designs are all one of a kind pieces handmade in Toronto all from recycled materials.
The combination of the unique skills and creative energy of co-founders Sven Schlegel and Willa Murray are the power house behind this great idea. They work out of a thriving workshop.

Sven’s natural eye for design and his drive for perfection compliment his background in Planning and Economics. A combination of excellent sewing skills and a willingness to experiment with materials make Willa an ideal co-founder. In 2008, Patricia Youn joined the team, adding her skills from her training in Fashion Design and Production. In 2011 Linsday Sinclair joined the team.

Sounds like a great team.

In addition to making a great range of bags they also offer a fascinating bespoke service. The Mariclaro Limited Edition is a mark of excellence that signifies the bag was made from limited materials from a specific car. They provide a photo of the car the main materials came from. It applies to all their models.

With all this creative energy it’s of no surprise to learn Mariclaro received the 2011 National Globe Award, the Honorary Small Business Award for the Best Green Consumer Product.

A great example of what can be done to take a waste stream and turn it into premium, attractive must have products

Green Glossary of Outdoor Gear

| Recycle Outdoor Gear | 16th March, 2012

carbon-footprint on ROG

The Green Glossary was first published on Rohantime and the OIA UK. It is a list of terms that are often used to describe the more sustainable outdoor clothing and gear choices. This is a growing area and we thought it would be beneficial to offer an explanation of some of the terms that you may come across when buying outdoor clothing and gear. This is a work in progress. If you would like to add any terms or talk about any of the terms please let us know in the comments box below and we will update the list.

1% for the planet
The 1% for the Planet organisation exists to build and support an alliance of businesses financially committed to creating a healthy planet. It is a global movement of companies donating at least 1% of their annual net revenues to environmental organizations worldwide. http://www.onepercentfortheplanet.org/en/
