Patagonia eBay UK and Reuse

used outdoor gear sold on recycle outdoor gear

Patagonia have linked up with eBay UK to enables sellers of used Patagonia outdoor clothing to resell their items in the UK.

The aim is to encourage customers to go into their wardrobes, find the Patagonia garments they don’t currently need, and list them on eBay to continue their useful life. Having taken the Patagonia Common Threads Pledge.

Whilst selling used outdoor gear is as old as the virtual hills. All industries need flagship brands that push out the envelopes of innovation and new thinking,. The biggest one that come to mind outside our industry is, or was, Apple for innovation.  Patagonia’s proven commitment to the 3 R’s and greener commerce is tremendous.  In November 2011, Patagonia and eBay Inc. joined forces to launch a new marketplace for customers to buy and sell used Patagonia gear in the United States. Today, with more than 38,000 items resold in the first year of the program.

It’s a lovely idea and I wish Patagonia and eBay well in their mission. Visit the eBay store

One question…

Why only used Patagonia product?

This an interesting question.

Friday 23rd November is Black Friday , the day after Thanksgiving Day in the USA one of the hottest shopping day of the year in The States. The start of the season for bargain hunting.

Walmart will kick off its holiday sales rush at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving, its earliest start ever, and will guarantee that those who line up can buy a trio of gadgets as it places a big bet that shoppers are ready to spend this holiday season.

It is  interesting that Buy Nothing Day (BND) an international day of protest against consumerism is held the Friday after American Thanksgiving in North America and Saturday November 24th 2012 is Buy Nothing Day (UK).

On Black Friday last year Patagonia released a very brave ground breaking advertisment in The New York Times in which it asks people to buy less—of everything, including its own products. “Don’t buy this jacket,” says the headline, alongside the retailer’s fleece jacket. Copy then explains, in bracing honesty, how the jacket was bad for the environment. The ad concludes: “There is much to be done and plenty for us all to do. Don’t buy what you don’t need. Think twice before you buy anything.

The advertisement and the company was talked about in journals the world over.

What Happened? Well Patagonia have had a very good year.

The company have developed their own reuse service on eBay to encourage reuse of Patagonia outdoor clothing.

Patagonia have announced the launch Common Threads Initiative in Portland USA

Portlanders can Trade-In their Used Patagonia Clothing and Shop the Common Threads Second Home Section at Patagonia Portland

In an effort to partner with its customers to take mutual responsibility for the full life cycle of the products it makes and customers purchase, Patagonia today announced a kickoff event for Common Threads Second Home.

Available only at Patagonia Portland, the company will be accepting used Patagonia clothing for trade-in and sale in the Second Home Section of Patagonia Portland. Common Threads Second Home will kickoff on Sunday, October 7th from 3-6 pm. Patagonia staff will be on site to accept Patagonia clothing in good condition–including shells, fleece, down and synthetic insulation jackets, and ski and alpine pants–in exchange for store credit.

The Common Threads Initiative is a partnership between Patagonia and our customers to reduce consumption and give the planet’s vital resources a rest. The initiative is organized around the four R’s of Reduce, Repair, Reuse, and Recycle,” said Rick Ridgeway, Vice President of Environmental Initiatives. “Common Threads Second Home supports the “R” of “Reuse” by offering a trade-in program that rewards our customers who clean out their closets and garages of their used but still serviceable Patagonia products, and bring them to us so they can be put back into circulation. We invite Portlanders to join us in the Common Threads Initiative by bringing their used Patagonia gear back to us and we’ll give it a second home.”

In addition to local Patagonia staff, eBay staff members will attend the kickoff event to help customers sell other used Patagonia clothing online through the Patagonia Common Threads Initiative storefront on eBay.com.

Patagonia Portland’s Common Threads Kickoff Event will take place at 907 NW Irving St., Suite 100 Portland, Oregon 97209.

More information or to become a partner in the Common Threads Initiative

It will be interesting to learn how this goes and if Patagonia are considering rolling the service out both in The States and Europe

This side of the Atlantic this is not dissimilar to Rohan partnering with Gift Your Gear during last month to encourage their customers and the UK outdoor community to trade in their reusable outdoor jackets trousers and fleece. The difference being the donations are not for resale but distribution to UK-based youth and community groups.
