It is World Environment Day on 5th June 2013
The UN has hosted World Environment Day every year since 1972, encouraging people to treat the environment more kindly and realise that it’s everyone’s responsibility to make the change.
Because it’s not just us that our actions on the world affects – it will have an impact on all our future generations too.
The theme for 2013 is ‘Think, Eat, Save‘. This is an anti food waste and food loss campaign encouraging all of us to do just that. Figures from the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) state that 1.3 billion tonnes of food per year is wasted – that is absolutely astonishing! Particularly when you read the sad facts that 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and over 20,000 children under the age of 5 die from hunger every day.
Economists are saying that the financial crisis that started in 2007 is the worst since the 1930s Great Depression. Therefore the new Green Economy is proposed as a more sustainable way of doing business. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness and spread the word of the importance of a Green Economy and the fact that we cannot carry on with business as usual.
Remember to tell the UN Environment Programme what you do and they’ll post it on their website!
