Gift Your Gear – It Belongs Outdoors

Gift Your Gear is an award-winning nationwide initiative that provides outdoor clothing and equipment to UK community organisations, youth groups and charities working with young people in the outdoors. Young people need to get outdoors for their physical and emotional well- being. The sun doesn’t always shine. It’s hard to enjoy your early experiences in the outdoors when you’re cold, wet and uncomfortable.

Give your unwanted outdoor gear a new lease of life.

Gift Your Gear has partnered with Rohan during September. Take your unwanted outdoor clothing to any Rohan shop during the month of September, that’s all outdoor clothing, rucksacks and includes children’s clothing regardless of brand and receive 15% off any full price purchase made on the same day. Offer ends 30th September 2014. Whether it’s to drop off your unwanted outdoor gear or to browse the new spring range you’re guaranteed to get a warm welcome.

Founded by Sarah Howcroft, Gift Your Gear was set up to encourage people to donate unwanted outdoor gear they no longer want or need. Sarah, is keen to increase the number of groups Gift Your Gear can help.

“To date Gift Your Gear has supported over 250 community organisations, youth groups and charities who work with young people in the outdoors. I hope that we can increase this number to 350 by the end of the Gift Your Gear – Rohan event”.

Donate your unwanted outdoor gear

The outdoor gear you donate will make a real difference to the community organisations, youth groups and charities who receive it. Enabling others to benefit from life changing experiences in the great outdoors regardless of their circumstances.

Help the next generation get outdoors.

We have worked with some fantastic groups during the last two years and learnt a great deal about their ongoing struggle to adequately equip all the young people involved.  It is important the donated outdoor gear gets to as many young people as possible. For this to happen we need  lots of groups located in all parts of the UK. So please let us know if we can help your group – Sarah Howcroft Founder Gift Your Gear

Are you dedicated to reusing outdoor gear?

Reuse second hand outdoor gear

This story caught my eye…

To highlight the positive style and environmental potentials of reusing, Christina Dean, Founder of Redress, swore to wear nothing but discarded clothes for an entire year. The 365 Challenge, which began on January 1st of this year, Founder Christina Dean is now five months into the challenge, and has chronicled her entire journey on Instagram. This got me thinking what if we feature stories from the many people who love the great outdoors, the kit and are dedicated to reusing gear. There must be loads of stories out there. If you buy and reuse gear, or maybe you are wearing hand me downs or a Gift Your Gear donation please let us know. If you are keeping your kit going by repairing  please share your story.

Patagonia eBay UK and Reuse

| Recycle Outdoor Gear | 13th May, 2013

used outdoor gear sold on recycle outdoor gear

Patagonia have linked up with eBay UK to enables sellers of used Patagonia outdoor clothing to resell their items in the UK.

The aim is to encourage customers to go into their wardrobes, find the Patagonia garments they don’t currently need, and list them on eBay to continue their useful life. Having taken the Patagonia Common Threads Pledge.

Whilst selling used outdoor gear is as old as the virtual hills. All industries need flagship brands that push out the envelopes of innovation and new thinking,. The biggest one that come to mind outside our industry is, or was, Apple for innovation.  Patagonia’s proven commitment to the 3 R’s and greener commerce is tremendous.  In November 2011, Patagonia and eBay Inc. joined forces to launch a new marketplace for customers to buy and sell used Patagonia gear in the United States. Today, with more than 38,000 items resold in the first year of the program.

It’s a lovely idea and I wish Patagonia and eBay well in their mission. Visit the eBay store

One question…

Why only used Patagonia product?

This an interesting question.

Recycling and the great outdoors

ROG - recycling and the great outdoors

Reuse, Recycling and the great outdoors

Before we look at the great outdoors we should perhaps take a look at the fashion industry because certain brands are making great strides with regard to at least 2R’s.

Reduce, reuse and recycle are three ‘R’ words we hear a lot about.

This tweet just caught my eye…

Did you hear? H&M wants to pay YOU to recycle?

H&M the fashion chain is putting its money where its mouth is. In February 2013, they’re initiating a recycling program where you get a discount card (if you spend over a certain amount) for every bag of used clothing your drop off at an H&M store, reducing the price of your new purchases while facilitating the reuse of your used garments. They are referring to is as their Global Clothes Collecting Initiative’. The bigger news about this one is they are making it available to customers in all their outlets across the globe. Customers in all 48 of the markets the company operates in will be able to hand in used garments for recycling.

Now that is impressive.

Before that M&S developed their Shwopping initiative. Read More

A good question on Huffington Past recently was

Do you know what other fast-fashion brand is tidying up its act?

Fact in the UK there are 350,000tonnes of clothing being sent to landfill each year. With a further 70,000tonnes destined for incineration. There will be lots of good reusable outdoor gear in this.

So back to the UK outdoor industry…

Think of any of the 3 R’s  when it comes to outdoor gear and you can’t help but gravitate towards Patagonia. They are market leaders in 3R implementation and customer acceptance and have developed their own 5thR  –  Reduce, Repair, Reuse, Recycle and Reimagine

Has this stimulated others to follow?

The short answer is yes but very slowly. So slow it’s almost undetectable.
This side of the Atlantic things are even slower. There are exceptions of course:

Really appreciate your help.

Season for giving with Gift Your Gear

| Recycle Outdoor Gear | 2nd December, 2012

Gift Your Gear - ROG

Donate your used outdoor gear through Gift Your Gear

The first very successful Gift Your Gear with Rohan initiative ended a few weeks ago.

Since then we have noticed a growing trend on ROG which is really lovely.

Many ROG users have asked if they can continue to donate their used, unwanted outdoor gear to Gift Your Gear.
So after a bit of organisation behind the scenes we have made it possible for this to happen.

This is how it all works:
Please contact us with details of the outdoor gear you have available to donate.
We will circulate the details to all Gift Your Gear beneficiary organisations.
Interest will be forwarded to you.
There is no charge for this service.

Gift Your Gear beneficiaries have all agreed to add donations to their communal outdoor gear equipment pools.
So you gear will get maximum use.
The groups are all UK-based often involved in getting young people in to the outdoors.
If you know of any organisation that would benefit from donated used outdoor gear please contact us

So it is the season for giving and you can now do it on ROG through Gift Your Gear.

Podcasts on Recycle Outdoor Gear

A big thank you to Bob Cartwright from Backpackinglight.co.uk and The Outdoor Station for the podcast and for giving us the chance to talk about our favourite subjects reuse and recycling outdoor gear in the UK

An overheard conversation in the press room led to my interview with Sarah Howcroft who has started a unique website for those wishing to sell, donate or pass on their old outdoor gear to others who might appreciate it. Recycling is a responsibility we all need to take notice of and this website will offer comfort to those with conscience.  Bob Cartwright

Gift Your Gear has come to an end

| Recycle Outdoor Gear | 1st October, 2012

rog thank you

Gift Your Gear has come to an end.

Early in September Rohan the UK Outdoor and Travel Clothing specialist put this question to the outdoor community…

Have you got outdoor gear you no longer want or use?

The answer came back a resounding Yes

During September Rohan partnered with ROG and Gift Your Gear to provide an ‘in shop take back service’ for all reusable outdoor jackets, trousers and fleece. This offer included used unwanted clothing from all outdoor brands, not just Rohan Outdoor Clothing.

The Rohan Shops have been busy collecting all the returned garments from, not only Rohan customers but all members of the UK outdoor community.

All the donations are now on their way to ROG for sorting and distribution to UK youth and community groups working in the outdoors.

Sarah Howcroft founder of ROG and Gift Your Gear

What has struck me over the life of the Rohan Gift Your Gear partnership has been the enthusiasm and willingness to participate in the spirit of Gift Your Gear by all the Rohan Shop teams and all who so kindly donated their fantastic outdoor gear. What a partnership.

We are now starting to sort through all the gear and it is really amazing just how long some of this gear had remained in 100% condition. I have seen Rohan Garments that are over 30 years old and will be used again for exactly what they where originally designed for.

So it is congratulations and thanks

  • To Rohan for making such long-lasting clothing,
  • To all the Rohan staff for making this happen
  • To all the outdoor community for donating such fantastic kit
  • A final extra special thanks to all the original Rohanists who donated their much love vintage Rohan garments.

I am keen to document the story of Gift Your Gear because it is an industry first and may prove useful to the industry in general. It is important to show that this has worked for us all. The stories of recipients of Gift your Gear will be told on ROG Blog and Rohantime. Partnerships just like this one can help to move the industry towards a more sustainable development path.

One final and sincere Thank You and let’s do it all again very soon…

We are really proud to announce that ROG has been nominated in the TGO – The Great Outdoors Awards in the Environmental or access initiative of the year category. A really big thank you to all who voted for us. Voting is now open to select the winner on this link

Hand Made in Harrogate

| Recycle Outdoor Gear | 6th August, 2012

We all know that Rohan shirts last a long time.

Over time they become cherished items, loaded with the memories of the times that they were worn, the holidays they were taken on and the photographs they appeared in.

If you change your mind about the colour or gain a couple of pounds and things don’t fit as well as they used to, you can pass it on or sell your gear through Recycle Outdoor Gear (ROG) or donate it on to a charity shop and let somebody else benefit from the many years of functional use left in the item. One shirt lasting ten years is better for the environment than ten shirts each lasting a season. Sustainability through longevity is very important to us.

There comes a point in every favourite shirt’s life that it just can’t be worn anymore; when it’s got a bit of paint on the sleeve, it’s gone a funny colour from the sun cream, you know the one, an old favourite sitting in the wardrobe waiting for the day that it gets sent sadly to the charity shop to be sold on as rags.

There is another way.

If you bring your old shirt into Rohan Harrogate we can arrange for your shirt to be turned into beautiful bunting by handmadeinharrogate.co.uk, perfect for summer garden parties and used for many years to come. For only £12 it will be turned into 5 metres of lovely shirt bunting keeping as many of the details as we can, collars, pockets, buttons that sort of thing and you buy another favourite Rohan shirt ready to be turned into bunting in another fifteen years, guilt free.

Have a look at Handmade in Harrogate for further information.

See you in Rohan Harrogate soon
